(12 of 36 Excerpts) – Spreads
Unfolding Narratives, explores the structure and architecture of nonlinear narratives through the physical act of folding and unfolding. To construct this, I collected a variety of narrative excerpts, each from different fictional literary sources. I then constructed a book that could unfold in a number of interchangeable orders. Using the excerpts as my content, I mapped out a series of narrative threads, each forming a unique story based on the order in which it is unfolded and read. In presenting these independent excerpts in this way, the reader cannot read any part without being influenced by the others that precede and follow it. Each unique excerpt becomes part of many narrative "wholes". The book uses color as the unifying factor that visually ties together each spread. Additionally, the choice of illustrative, typographical compositions aims to enhance the overall narrative experience.
